Whether you’re focusing on gut-health, reducing inflammation, or simply looking for a healthier twist on taco night, this recipe is one we come back to again and again. It’s simple, nourishing, and full of fresh flavor!

What Makes These Baked Anti-Inflammatory Fish Tacos Gut-Healthy:

One of the reasons I love these baked anti-inflammatory fish tacos so much is that every ingredient supports our health. They’re not only flavorful, they’re intentionally chosen to support gut-health, reduce inflammation, and nourish our bodies with real, whole foods.

Wild Alaskan Cod:

Cod is a lean source of high-quality protein and contains important vitamins and minerals like selenium, B12, and Omega-3s. Protein supports tissue repair and immune function which is important for healing from inflammation.

Turmeric:

Turmeric has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to treat different medical conditions. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric has been studied for it’s strong anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties. It has been shown to help reduce inflammation and support our joint, digestive, and overall health. Including turmeric in my whitefish spice rub adds healing benefits to these anti-inflammatory fish tacos.

Purple Cabbage:

Purple cabbage is rich in antioxidants and a good source of fiber, which plays a key role in gut health by supporting a balanced and diverse microbiome. It is packed with phytonutrients that have anti-inflammatory properties and support our heart health. Adding fresh purple cabbage brings crunch, fiber, and additional anti-inflammatory and gut-healing benefits to these baked fish tacos.

Cilantro:

Cilantro is an herb rich in antioxidants and vitamin K. It has traditionally been used in herbal practices to support digestion and detox pathways, and reduce inflammation.

Sprouted + Fermented Buckwheat Tortillas:

Using sprouted and fermented buckwheat tortillas makes these tocos both gluten-free and gut-healthy. Sprouting can enhance nutrient availability by aiding in digestion, and fermentation will help the beneficial bacteria in our gut-microbiome. Choosing minimally processed tortillas with simple ingredients aligns with an anti-inflammatory whole-foods approach to eating and it makes these baked anti-inflammatory fish tacos even more nourishing than conventional tortilla options.

What You’ll Need to Make These Baked Anti-Inflammatory Fish Tacos:

These baked anti-inflammatory fish tacos come together with simple, whole-food ingredients that support gut health and bring bold, fresh flavor to taco night.

Fish:

  • 2 lbs wild alaskan cod fillets (or another whitefish like halibut)

Cod works beautifully in baked fish tacos because it’s tender, flaky, and mild. It’s the perfect base for my anti-inflammatory whitefish spice rub.

Whitefish Spice Rub:

  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp Himalayan pink salt
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper

Tortillas:

  • Sprouted & Fermented Buckwheat Tortillas

For these gut-healthy fish tacos, I love using sprouted buckwheat tortillas because they’re gluten-free, minimally processed, and much easier to digest than conventional tortillas. I personally use Pacha’s Sprouted Buckwheat Sourdough Tortillas, you can use my code TPJL for 20% off if you’d like to try them.

Toppings:

  • Purple Cabbage (thinly sliced)
  • Fresh Cilantro
  • Fresh Limes
  • My Fresh Mango Salsa (highly recommend making this)

How to Make Simple Fish Tacos Step-by-Step:

Making these baked anti-inflammatory fish tacos is simple and quick, perfect for an easy, nourishing taco night.

1. Prepare the Spice Rub:

In a small bowl, mix together all of the whitefish rub ingredients until well combined. This blend makes more than you’ll need, so feel free to store the extra in a spice jar for your next batch of baked fish tacos, grilled chicken, or roasted vegetables.

2. Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 400℉. If you’re using a cast iron baking sheet, place it in the oven while it preheats. Lightly grease the hot baking sheet with coconut oil before adding the fish. (If you’re new to cooking with cast iron, you can read more about how we care for ours in this post.)

3. Season the Cod:

Pat the cod fillets dry and generously sprinkle the spice rub over both sides, gently pressing it in to coat evenly.

4. Bake the Fish:

Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Cooking time may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your fillets.

5. Prepare the Toppings:

While the fish is baking, thinly slice the purple cabbage, chop the cilantro, and prepare your mango salsa if using.

6. Warm the Tortillas:

In a small cast iron skillet over medium heat, warm the sprouted buckwheat tortillas for about 60 seconds per side, until soft and pliable. Transfer them to a clean towel or tortilla basket to keep warm until ready to assemble the tacos.

7. Assemble the Tacos:

Flake the baked cod into large pieces and layer onto each tortilla. Top with purple cabbage, fresh cilantro, a squeeze of lime, and a spoonful of mango salsa for balanced, flavorful fish tacos.

Serve immediately and enjoy!
