Are you looking for a natural way to relieve pain topically? This simple topical pain relief remedy using copaiba, spruce, lavender, and jojoba oil is great for relieving inflammation, healing swelling or bruises, and soothing pain. I discovered the healing properties of copaiba oil about a year ago and have since been using it often, to relieve the inflammation in my joints and muscles due to my auto-immune illness.

Benefits of Copaiba Oil and other Ingredients in this Topical Pain Relief:

  • Copaiba Essential Oil: Copaiba is a powerful anti-inflammatory! It contains a compound, beta-caryophylline, making it an analgesic to aid in reducing pain.
  • Spruce Essential Oil: Spruce is another anti-inflammatory that can relax muscles and soothe joint inflammation.
  • Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender oil is most known for its calming effect. But it is also anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory.
  • Carrier Oil: Due to their high concentration, it is important to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying topically. Some great carrier oils are: jojoba, coconut, sweet almond, and olive oil.

My favorite carrier oil for this remedy is jojoba because it’s properties mimic our skins’ natural properties. This makes it less likely to clog pores or create skin irritations. This oil also has anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and an ability to maintain our skin’s PH balance while strengthening the skin barrier. In other words this oil is healing for our skin especially if you have more sensitive skin.

Topical Copaiba Oil Pain Relief Recipe:

You will need:

  • A carrier oil of your choosing (I prefer Jojoba or Coconut)
  • Copaiba Essential Oil, can also be referred to as Copaiba Balsam
  • Spruce Essential Oil (I love black spruce but other varieties are great too)
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Optional: Small container to mix in. For simplicity, I just mix it in the palm of my hands. See the video demonstration below.

Instructions:

1. Gather the oils listed above. Open the lids on all these oils, you’ll understand why if you ever forget to do this first, as I often do. Then I am stuck with a palm full of oil trying to open the other bottles one handed.

2. Next you can place some carrier oil into the palm of your hand (or a small container). I aim for around a 3/4 tsp depending on the size of the area I want to apply the topical remedy to. You will want to adjust the amount to fit your specific needs.

3. Drop a couple drops of the copaiba oil into the carrier oil in the palm of your hand.

4. Then add just a drop of the spruce and a drop of the lavender into the palm of your hand.

5. Apply the oil to your targeted area of pain. Sometimes I like to rub it together in both palms before applying.

You might be wondering more about this topical pain relief:

  • How often should I apply this topical anti-inflammatory?
    • I have found it to be beneficial for me to apply it once a day to active areas of inflammation and pain. If my joints/muscles are really inflamed I might apply it more than once that day. As with anything, its good to use in moderation and take a break from regular use to avoid building up a tolerance which would make it less effective.
  • What does copaiba oil smell like?
    • Copaiba’s sweet earthy aroma reminds me of crisp mountain mornings and fresh pine needles. For me, that scent combined with spruce and lavender is simply the best!
  • Where does the copaiba oil come from?
    • Copaiba essential oil is extracted from the resin of the copaiba tree. This tree is predominant in South America.

I hope this can help you in the same way that it has helped me manage my joint and muscle pain. Let me know in the comments below if you try this out. I’d also love to hear what other oils you are using and how they help you.

I had a fall last week and put this on my leg where I had some swelling. I love that wintergreen fir/pine smell.
